Karen is photographic artist living in Mobile. She is known for her documentary-style images of the American South, with a focus on expressions of faith, considerations of home, and the impressible powers of nature. Her practice uses vivid color and light to explore the unheard voice, via gesture, sense of place, and mood. Currently, she is exploring new work using vintage photographic paper.
When reflecting on the past 12 months, Karen shares her thoughts about these digital images captured in 2020. Click links for more: The Photo Taken, Composite (l) and All Saints Church (r).
Recently featured in the online photography magazine, Lenscratch, Karen's project, "Presence Obscured", was selected for an exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The same series was featured in Atlanta Photography Group's exhibition Portfolio 2020. Another from the series was in an exhibition at the New Orleans Photo Alliance. Locally, her works have been exhibited at the Mobile Arts Council, Mobile Art Association exhibits and a Mobile Museum of Art pop-up exhibit in Government Plaza
Two years ago, Karen established Central ArtSanctuary at Central Presbyterian Church, the home of MOJO Jazz Jambalayas. Under her leadership, the ArtSanctuary hosted quarterly exhibitions: Works on-loan from The Do Good Fund, a photo exhibit with panel discussion about prejudice and bias and a dance themed exhibition of oil paintings, photographs and dance performance. She is a member of the Central Arts Collective.
Earlier this month, CAS put together a slide show projected on the exterior wall of the church to lift spirits and bring joy during the last days of Mardi Gras. Another exhibition in the parking lot has a series of photographs by Vincent Lawson, EJ Wright and Lynn Henderson Oldshue. The images in the outdoor show document activities at the weekly distributions at the Food Pantry at Central.
